HP Holds Navy Network ‘Hostage’ for $3.3 Billion

=============================
=============================
From Wired:

Someday, somehow, the U.S. Navy would like to run its networks — maybe even own its computers again. After 10 years and nearly $10 billion, many sailors are tired of leasing their PCs, and relying on a private contractor to operate most of their data systems. Troops are sick of getting stuck with inboxes that hold 150 times less than a Gmail account, and local networks that go down for days while Microsoft Office 2007 gets installed … in 2010. But the Navy just can’t quit its tangled relationship with Hewlett-Packard. The admirals and the firm recently signed another $3.3 billion no-bid contract that begins Oct. 1st. It’s a final, five-year deal, both sides promise, to let the Navy gently wean itself from its reliance on HP. But that’s what they said the last time, and the time before that.

Native ZFS Is Coming To Linux Next Month

========================
Remember Sun's ZFS is now owned by Oracle.
 ========================

From PHORONIX:

Prior to the emergence of Btrfs as a viable next-generation Linux file-system, Sun's ZFS file-system was sought after for Linux due to its advanced feature-set and capabilities compared to EXT3 and other open-source file-systems at the time.

While ZFS support has worked its way into OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and other operating systems, ZFS had not been ported to Linux as its source-code is distributed under the CDDL license, which is incompatible with the GNU GPL barring it from integration into the mainline Linux kernel.

Next month, however, a working ZFS module for the Linux kernel without a dependence on FUSE will be publicly released.

LBK Post Dangerous Security Flaw Patched in Linux

From:

Dangerous Security Flaw Patched in Linux

A critical vulnerability in the Linux kernel that gives attackers access to root via X server  has been patched by Linus Torvalds. Meanwhile, kernel developer James Morris reports on the first-annual Linux Security Summit (LSS), which covered topics including usability, hardening the kernel, and API standardization.

LBK Interesting Tech Topics

A Sticker Makes Solar Panels Work Better

A startup's polymer sticker increases power output by 10 percent, and can be applied to panels that are already installed.

The power output of solar panels can be boosted by 10 percent
just by applying a big transparent sticker to the front.

Developed by a small startup called Genie Lens Technologies, the sticker is a polymer film embossed with microstructures that bend incoming sunlight. The result: the active materials in the panels absorb more light,
and convert more of it into electricity.

LBK Post Linux New Block Party

High Availability With the Linux
Distributed Replicated Block Device

The 2.6.33 Linux kernel has introduced a useful
new service called the DRBD -
Distributed Replicated Block Device.
This service mirrors an entire block device to another networked
 host during run time, permitting the development of
 high-availability clusters for block data.

Solar Tsunami to Strike Earth Tonight

The Sun's surface erupted early Sunday morning, blasting tons of plasma into interplanetary space -- directly towards the Earth.

That wall of ionized atoms should hit the planet tonight, say scientists, creating a geomagnetic storm and a spectacular light show and possibly threatening satellites in orbit.

"This eruption is directed right at us and is expected to get here
early in the day on Aug. 4th," said

Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

"It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."
