LBK Post 034 LSE Hits Record Trade Speed with Linux

From http://www.osnews.com

London Stock Exchange Smashes
Record Trade Speed with Linux

Linux "The London Stock Exchange has said its new Linux-based system is delivering world record networking speed, with 126 microsecond trading times.

The news comes ahead a major Linux-based switchover in twelve days, during which the open source system will replace Microsoft .Net technology on the groups main stock exchange.

The LSE had long been criticised on speed and reliability, grappling with trading speeds of several hundred microseconds.

The record breaking times were measured on the LSE's Turquoise smaller dark pool trading venue, where trades are conducted anonymously.

That network switched over to Linux from Cinnober technology two weeks ago. Speed is crucial as more firms trade automatically at lightning speed, using advanced algorithms."

LBK Post 033 Ubuntu 10.10 Getting More Full-Press Traction

From http://arstechnica.com

Blessed Unity: Ars reviews Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu 10.10, codenamed Maverick Meerkat, emerged from its burrow this month with some important changes. The user interface got a lift from some theming improvements and a new default font. Usability got a nice boost from a wide range of design improvements and feature enhancements in the Software Center and Ubiquity installer. Canonical's effort to clean up the notification area took another step forward with the addition of playback controls in the sound indicator menu. The latest version of GNOME is included, with a handful of minor improvements, and the F-Spot photo manager was replaced with Shotwell.

Japan's Latest Rockstar Is a 3D Hologram

"Hatsune Miku is a Japanese pop diva who's just started to play massive stadium concerts to sold out crowds. Her hair is blue, she dresses like Sailor Moon, and she'll only appear in concerts via a 3D 'hologram.' Oh, and did I forget to mention that she's completely fictional? Created by Crypton Future Media, Hatsune Miku and her virtual colleagues have gone on limited tours in Japan."

High-Resolution Photos Come to Facebook

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The new photos will allow people to upload pictures in 2048 pixel resolution and for their friends to download  those pictures. The bulk tagging ability will recognize the same person in multiple pictures, but won't link it to their profile. It uses a very minimalistic facial recognition technology. "This isn't face recognition," Sam Odio, Facebook Photos Project Manager  insisted. "Picasa and iPhoto--they'll detect a face and say, 'This is Sam,' and they'll suggest that it's Sam. We're not doing that. We're not linking any faces to profiles automatically. Right now, we want to stay away from that because it's a very touchy subject."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Catering to some 500 million users who upload more than 100 million images each day, Facebook said it is adding high-resolution image support and a new photo upload tool.

Facebook began rolling out some significant upgrades to its Photos service late Thursday, including the ability to upload and download high-resolution images up to 2048×2048 pixels in dimension, as well as bulk tagging options and a new, elegant lightbox interface for viewing images on the site.

The changes put Facebook on a level with Flickr and other image and portfolio-sharing sites; artists, photographers, models and graphic designers will have every reason to display their work on Facebook now. The new image sizes should also allow users to make quality prints.
