Linux by Knight Post 038 THE LURE OF SHINY TOYS and BSD

DragonFly BSD 3.0 was released today, bringing the improved performance on MP systems (MP kernel became the default one in ths release), TrueCrypt-compatible disk encryption, enhanced POSIX compatibility and other improvements. The next big thing for the project will be the major revision of the HAMMER file system (HAMMER2). The DragonFly founder Matthew Dillon said it to be the main focus of his effort for the whole year, though the full implementation is expected only in 2013.

PC-BSD 9.0 Released

Hot on the heels of the release of FreeBSD 9, it's the ninth version of its desktop-oriented offspring to jump into the spotlight. "Based upon FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE, this is the first release of PC-BSD which offers users a variety of desktop environments to choose from, such as KDE, GNOME, XFCE, LXDE and more! Also available are pre-built VirtualBox and VMware images with integrated guest tools for rapid virtual system deployment, and native support for installing directly to OS X BootCamp partitions."

Canonical Brings Ubuntu to Android

Take this as a sign of things to come in the land of convergence. Yesterday, Ubuntu announced Ubuntu for Android. This new product basically allows you to run the entire Ubuntu Linux distribution on your Android smartphone connected to an external display and keyboard and mouse.

At first glance, you may think we're looking at a virtualised Ubuntu instance outputting to the HDMI-out of an Android smartphone, but it's actually a little bit more refined than that. Instead, it runs an X server on the smartphone which outputs over HDMI, using the exact same kernel Android itself is running on. Clever (although I'm sure done before).

Linux by Knight Post 037 Flash Update — Check Your Plugins

Adobe released an update to Flash on February 15th to address an exploit that affected Internet Exploiter users. Even if you don’t use IE, you should still update your Flash plugins.

This would a good time to check on the ‘health’ of your other Firefox plugins. You can do this from within Firefox by going to Tools > Add-ons and then clicking the link Check to see if your plugins are up to date.

This will open the Mozilla plugin checker site in a new tab where a quick scan will tell you which plugins needs to be updated.

Linux by Knight Post 036 Google has Released Dartium

A Chromium Build with a Dart VM

Dart is a new programming language that Google is developing for client-side Web scripting. The language has a more conventional object model than JavaScript and optional support for static typing, features that Google claims will allow it to be faster, safer, and more conducive to tooling than JavaScript. Much like Microsoft's VBScript, Dart is a nonstandard client language that is developed and supported by a single vendor outside of the Web standards process.

Dartium, which can be downloaded from the Dart language website, is currently available for Mac OS X and Linux. Google says that a Windows build is coming soon. For more details, you can refer to the official Google Code blog.

Will Fedora 17 Beefy Miracle get Cinnamon?

From the 'Would You Like a Mint
                              with your Fedora' files:

The upcoming Fedora 17 Beefy Miracle release is likely to be one of the most feature packed Fedora Linux releases in years.

One feature that I'd like to see in it, is the Cinnamon desktop.

Looks like it's a 'no'.  (according to Reddit Linux)  Wingman.

Fixes for power-saving issues arrived in the Linux kernel and a backdoor was discovered in TRENDnet IP cameras. German researchers cracked the encryption algorithms used in satellite phones and a man-in-the-middle certificate was issued by Trustwave, a certificate authority. Following feedback from its customers, SDG Systems added an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS option for its rugged tablet computer, which previously only shipped with Windows 7 Professional.

Linux by Knight Post 035 The Age of Big Data

From:  http://www.nytimes.com

GOOD with numbers? Fascinated by data? The sound you hear is opportunity knocking. Mo Zhou was snapped up by I.B.M. last summer, as a freshly minted Yale M.B.A., to join the technology company’s fast-growing ranks of data consultants. They help businesses make sense of an explosion of data — Web traffic and social network comments, as well as software and sensors that monitor shipments, suppliers and customers — to guide decisions, trim costs and lift sales. “I’ve always had a love of numbers,” says Ms. Zhou, whose job as a data analyst suits her skills.

Linux by Knight Post 034 oVirt's Virtualisation Software gets a First Release

The oVirt project has released the first version of its software for implementing and managing virtualised environments. Among the components in this first release since the project was open sourced is the oVirt Engine,

the central interface of the management part of oVirt which runs on a JBoss application server. It has an "Admin Portal" web interface for implementing, configuring and managing hosts and guests, a REST API for custom scripts and programs, and a "User Portal" for logging into guest systems.

Open Source Driver for ARM's Mali Graphics appears

Lima is an open source driver for ARM's own Mali-200 and Mali-400 graphics chips as used in various systems-on-a-chip (SoC) containing Cortex-A8 and Cortex-A9 ARM processors. SoCs of this type are found in a number of recent Android tablets and smartphones. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone has a Mali-400 present in its Exynos SoC.

The developers of the driver are planning to add support for the latest Mali-T604 and Mali-T658 GPUs for Cortex-A15 SoCs as soon as devices containing these chips become available. The code is available from the project's gitorious site; a guide to acquiring hardware suitable for developing the Lima driver on is also available.

Lima's development is sponsored by Codethink, a UK-based mobile and embedded device specialist.

Mesa 3D 8.0 Supports OpenGL 3.0 and GLSL 1.30

The Mesa project has released version 8.0 of Mesa 3D – the first version of the OpenGL implementation and 3D driver collection to support OpenGL 3.0 and version 1.30 of GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language). As usual, the
features supported are dependent on the hardware and drivers used: the i965 driver for recent Intel graphics cores should already include everything required for OpenGL 3.0 and GLSL 1.30. According to a presentationPDF given by a group of Nouveau developers at FOSDEM, Mesa 3D driver NVC0 also supports both technologies. NVC0 operates as a driver for many Fermi generation graphics cores, which are primarily used in GeForce 400 and 500 series models.
